GST Calculator Guide: Add GST, Remove GST, and Understand Tax-Inclusive Pricing

Updated March 19, 2026

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a broad-based consumption tax levied in many countries including India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Singapore. The tax is applied as a percentage of the sale price. Businesses need to add GST to invoices, and consumers need to know the before-tax price when comparing costs. A GST calculator handles both directions: adding GST to a net price, and extracting the GST component from a GST-inclusive total.

GST Rates by Country

CountryStandard GST/VAT rateNotes
India5%, 12%, 18%, 28%Multiple slabs; most goods 18%
Australia10%Flat rate with some exemptions
New Zealand15%Almost no exemptions
Canada5% GST + provincial HST/PSTCombined rate 13–15% in most provinces
Singapore9%Increased from 8% in 2024
UK20%Called VAT; some goods at 5% or 0%
Germany / France19% / 20%Called VAT; reduced rates for food/essentials

Adding GST to a Price (Exclusive to Inclusive)

When you have a price before tax (GST-exclusive) and want to find the total price the customer pays:

GST Amount = Net Price × (GST Rate / 100)
Gross Price = Net Price + GST Amount
           = Net Price × (1 + GST Rate / 100)

Example (10% GST):
Net Price = $450
GST Amount = 450 × 0.10 = $45
Gross Price = $450 + $45 = $495

Removing GST from a Price (Inclusive to Exclusive)

When you have a price that already includes tax and need to find the pre-tax amount or the exact GST component:

Net Price = Gross Price / (1 + GST Rate / 100)
GST Amount = Gross Price - Net Price

Example (10% GST):
Gross Price = $495
Net Price = 495 / 1.10 = $450
GST Amount = 495 - 450 = $45
Common mistake: dividing by the rate instead of (1 + rate)

To remove 10% GST from $495, the correct method is to divide by 1.10, giving $450. A common error is to calculate 10% of $495 = $49.50, then subtract to get $445.50. This is wrong because it treats 10% as a percentage of the gross (inclusive) price rather than the net price. The GST is always calculated on the net price.

India's Multi-Rate GST Slabs

India operates a tiered GST system where different goods and services attract different rates. Understanding which slab applies is as important as knowing how to calculate it.

GST rateTypical goods and services
0% (exempt)Fresh produce, milk, curd, books, newspapers
5%Packaged food, small restaurants, economy hotel rooms
12%Processed food, computers, business class air travel
18%Most manufactured goods, professional services, telecom
28%Luxury goods, automobiles, tobacco, aerated drinks

GST on Invoices and Business Records

For businesses registered for GST, invoices must show the net amount, the GST amount, and the gross total separately. The GST collected is held in trust for the government and remitted periodically (monthly or quarterly depending on the country and turnover).

Input Tax Credit (ITC) is the mechanism that prevents double taxation: GST-registered businesses can claim back the GST they paid on their own business purchases (inputs) against the GST they collected from sales (outputs). Only the net GST — collected minus paid — is remitted to the government.

Reverse Charge Mechanism

In some transactions, particularly imports or services received from unregistered suppliers, the buyer is required to pay GST directly to the government rather than paying it to the supplier. This is called the reverse charge mechanism. A GST calculator helps verify the correct amounts in these cases as well.
