You open Claude.ai and the page either stays completely blank, shows a "Claude is having trouble" error, or you type a message and the response starts then stops abruptly with no way to continue. Sometimes you get redirected back to the login page even after you've already signed in. These issues are more common than you might expect — Claude.ai is a complex web application with multiple interdependent systems, and any one of them can break your session.
The good news is that most Claude.ai problems are browser-side rather than a true server outage, and they can be resolved in minutes. This guide covers every common failure mode — from Anthropic server issues to stale browser cookies and extension interference — so you can get Claude working again quickly.
"Claude is having trouble" error on screen → Could be a server issue or a broken session. Check Fix 1 (status), then Fix 3 (clear cookies).
Blank white page at claude.ai → Almost always a browser or extension issue. Try Fix 4 (incognito) immediately.
Response starts then stops mid-sentence → Network drop or usage limit hit. See Fix 2 (hard refresh) and FAQ below.
"Conversation not found" error → Session expired or conversation was deleted. Log out and back in (Fix 6).
Stuck in a login loop (keeps redirecting to login) → Corrupted auth cookie. Fix 3 (clear cookies) resolves this almost every time.
Everything works except on one device → Device-specific issue. Try Fix 5 (different browser) first.
Why this matters: Before spending time troubleshooting your browser or account, confirm the problem isn't on Anthropic's end. Anthropic publishes a real-time status page that shows whether Claude.ai, the API, and supporting services are operating normally or experiencing incidents.
Visit status.anthropic.com in your browser. If you see an active incident — especially one affecting "Claude.ai" or "API" — the issue is widespread and no amount of local troubleshooting will fix it. Note the estimated resolution time if provided, and check back periodically. Most Anthropic incidents resolve within 30 minutes to a few hours.
If the status page shows all systems green but you're still having problems, the issue is on your end. Continue to the remaining fixes.
Why this matters: A standard refresh (F5 or clicking the reload button) reloads the page but keeps cached resources. A hard refresh forces the browser to re-download everything fresh from Anthropic's servers, which can resolve issues caused by a stale or corrupted JavaScript bundle.
On Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + Shift + R or hold Shift and click the browser's reload button.
On Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R in Chrome or Firefox. In Safari, hold Shift and click reload.
After the hard refresh, wait for the page to fully load before typing anything. If Claude.ai now loads correctly, you're done. If not, continue to Fix 3.
Why this matters: Claude.ai uses cookies to maintain your login session and conversation state. If these cookies become corrupted — which can happen after a browser update, an Anthropic server change, or even just a long gap between sessions — you get stuck in broken states like infinite login loops or "conversation not found" errors.
In Chrome:
Alternatively (all browsers): Go to browser settings → Privacy → Clear browsing data → select "Cookies and other site data" with the time range set to "All time" → clear data. Note: this logs you out of all websites.
Why this matters: Incognito mode runs with no extensions and a clean cookie slate. If Claude.ai works perfectly in incognito but not in your regular browser, the culprit is almost certainly a browser extension — common offenders include ad blockers, privacy tools, password managers, and VPN extensions that intercept web requests.
Open incognito: Chrome: Ctrl+Shift+N (Cmd+Shift+N on Mac). Firefox: Ctrl+Shift+P. Edge: Ctrl+Shift+N.
Navigate to claude.ai in incognito and log in. If it works, go back to your regular browser and disable extensions one at a time to identify the culprit. The most likely offenders are ad blockers and script blockers — try disabling uBlock Origin or similar tools first.
Why this matters: Claude.ai is a JavaScript-heavy application that can behave differently across browsers. Occasionally a specific browser version or rendering engine has a compatibility issue with how Anthropic's frontend is coded. If you normally use Chrome, try Firefox or Edge. If you use Safari, try Chrome.
This also helps confirm whether the problem is browser-specific or account/network-level. If Claude.ai works in one browser but not another, update the non-working browser to the latest version or reinstall it.
Why this matters: Your Claude.ai session token can become invalid after an Anthropic server update, a long period of inactivity, or certain account changes. When the session token is stale, the interface may load but fail to process requests, or constantly redirect you to the login page.
If you use Google or Apple SSO to log in, make sure you're also signed into your Google or Apple account before attempting to re-authenticate with Claude.
Why this matters: If Claude.ai is broken in your browser but you need it urgently, the Claude mobile app (available on both iOS App Store and Google Play) is a completely separate client. It connects to the same Anthropic backend but doesn't share browser state, cookies, or extensions. Browser issues that prevent claude.ai from loading don't affect the mobile app.
Download the official Claude app from Anthropic (search "Claude by Anthropic" to find the correct app). Log in with the same account credentials. Your conversation history syncs between the web and mobile clients, so you won't lose anything by switching temporarily.
Q: Why does Claude stop responding mid-message?
A: Mid-response cutoffs usually have one of three causes: you've hit the output length limit for your plan tier, there was a network interruption between your browser and Anthropic's servers, or the server encountered an error generating the response. Try refreshing and retrying. If it happens consistently, break your request into smaller parts or upgrade to Claude Pro for higher output limits.
Q: Is Claude AI free?
A: Claude.ai has a free tier with daily usage limits. When you reach the limit, you'll see a message indicating your quota is used up and when it resets. Claude Pro is a paid monthly subscription that provides significantly higher usage limits, priority access during peak hours, and early access to new features. The Anthropic API is separately priced per token for developers building applications.
Q: Why is Claude slower than ChatGPT?
A: Response speed depends on model, server load, and response length. Claude tends to generate more detailed responses by default, which takes longer to stream. During peak US business hours, both services slow down due to high traffic. Claude's faster Haiku model responds much quicker than Sonnet or Opus. If speed is your priority, try using Claude via the API with the Haiku model.
Q: What are Claude's usage limits?
A: Anthropic doesn't publish exact message counts for free tier limits — they vary based on message length and server load. When you hit the daily limit, Claude shows a reset time. Claude Pro subscribers get much higher limits and priority queuing. For unlimited access, the Anthropic API charges per token with no hard message cap, which is cost-effective for heavy users.
Q: Why does Claude say it can't help with something?
A: Claude has built-in safety guidelines that prevent assistance with certain content types — weapons instructions, illegal activities, and similar harmful material. These are intentional design decisions, not technical errors. For legitimate requests that Claude declines, try adding context about your purpose (e.g., "for academic research" or "I'm a medical professional"). Claude is generally willing to discuss sensitive topics in appropriate educational or professional contexts.
If you've tried all seven fixes and Claude.ai is still not working, the issue may be account-specific or related to an ongoing Anthropic incident. Submit a support request through Anthropic's official support portal at support.anthropic.com. Include your browser, operating system, and a description of what you see when the problem occurs.
