Google Pay (Google Wallet) may fail to process payments, not respond at NFC terminals, show "Card can't be used" errors, or have trouble adding new cards. This affects contactless in-store payments, online payments, and peer-to-peer transfers.
NFC disabled: NFC must be turned on for tap-to-pay.
Card not verified: Your bank may require additional verification.
Default payment not set: The wrong card may be set as default.
Phone not supported: Some phones don't support Google Pay's NFC payments.
App outdated: Old versions may have payment bugs.
Security lock not set: Google Pay requires a screen lock for security.
• Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > NFC.
• Turn NFC on.
• Make sure "Contactless payments" is set to Google Pay/Wallet.
• Google Pay requires a screen lock (PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face unlock).
• Go to Settings > Security > Screen Lock and set one up.
• Google Pay won't work without a screen lock.
• Open Google Wallet app.
• Make sure the card you want to use is set as the default.
• Tap the card and follow any verification prompts.
• Go to Settings > Apps > Google Wallet (or Google Pay).
• Tap Storage > Clear Cache.
• Reopen the app and try again.
• Open Google Wallet and remove the problematic card.
• Tap "Add to Wallet" > Payment card.
• Re-add the card and complete bank verification.
• Go to Play Store and update Google Wallet.
• Also check for Android system updates: Settings > System > System Update.
• Restart your phone after updating.
If Google Pay still doesn't work, contact Google Pay support through the app, or contact your bank to ensure the card is authorized for mobile payments.
Q: Why won't Google Pay work at the terminal?
A: Make sure NFC is on, your phone is unlocked, and you're holding the back of your phone near the terminal. The phone should vibrate when payment is processing.
Q: Does Google Pay work without internet?
A: Yes, in-store NFC payments work offline. However, you need internet to add cards, make online payments, or send money.
Q: Can I use Google Pay on any Android phone?
A: Google Pay NFC payments require a phone with NFC hardware running Android 5.0+. Not all budget phones have NFC.
Q: Why does Google Pay say my card isn't supported?
A: Your bank may not support Google Pay, or the specific card type isn't eligible. Check with your bank or try a different card.
