Number To Words Converter

Convert numbers into words for invoices and docs.

How This Tool Works

The Number to Words Converter converts numeric values to their written English equivalent — for example, 1234567 becomes 'one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven'. This is required for writing cheques/checks (legal and banking requirement), drafting legal contracts and invoices where amounts must be stated in words, educational materials, and generating accessible content for screen readers. The converter handles both cardinal numbers (one, two, three) and ordinal numbers (first, second, third).

How to Use

  1. Enter the number in field A (digits only — no commas or currency symbols).
  2. Click Run. The result shows the number written out in words.
  3. For currency: the output gives the base amount in words; add 'dollars and X cents' manually.
  4. For ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd): use ordinal mode if available.

Common Questions

What is the difference between cardinal and ordinal numbers?

Cardinal numbers count quantity: one, two, three. Ordinal numbers indicate position: first, second, third. Cheques and legal documents use cardinal ('five hundred dollars'). Rankings and sequences use ordinal ('the third clause').

How are large numbers written?

US/short scale: 1,000 = thousand; 1,000,000 = million; 1,000,000,000 = billion. UK/long scale (traditional): 1,000,000,000 = milliard (not used in modern UK). Modern UK uses the short scale. Always clarify which scale when dealing with international contracts above one million.

Why must cheques have amounts in words?

Written-word amounts are harder to fraudulently alter than numerals. If there is a discrepancy between the number and the words on a cheque, banks legally use the written-word amount as authoritative.
